It’s been over 2 years since the first release of Samsung’s theme creator software. A lot of things changed, especially the software. You can find the most recent version on Samsung Developers now:

Long promised, finally released! The Samsung Theme Designer software was just published yestereve. With this theme creator average Joe is finally able to let his creativity flow as well!

Previously, the creation of themes was limited to some very unknown companies, which are assumed to be special Samsung partners, yet didn’t manage really manage to impress us with their designs. Now, all signs are set for change!

With the Theme Designer, you can, of course, change the App Icons of the default system applications, such as Contacts, Music, Internet, and so on, but also the icons in the top control bar (with signal strength, battery, etc.).

Customizing the overall look and feel through changing the main theme colours of panels, softkeys, and text items is also possible.

Your changes can be reviewed in the built in GUI emulator.

To get into the theme creation more easily, Samsung provided some resources for eager designers. Apart from the additionally included themes of hu1 we know from the Appstore, a Theme Developer platform has been started on the Samsung Innovators site. Even Youtube video tutorials are provided, albeit they are only explaining how to start a project in 30 seconds, but this gives hopes for a basis for more thorough documentation and support.
